ACTION UPDATE: SUCCESS! HOCHUL SIGNS HISTORIC CLIMATE SUPERFUND ACT.
Cornell on Fire joined over 100 activists and people of common sense at the New York State Capitol in Albany on December 10, 2024, to demand that Governor Hochul sign the Climate Superfund Act to make polluters pay for the climate damages they have knowingly caused. The Act already passed both houses of the New York Legislature and was only awaiting Hochul’s approval. Thanks in large part to grassroots activism, Governor Hochul signed the historic bill into law on December 26, 2024.
As Senator Krueger writes, the Climate Change Superfund Act is crucial to make daily life affordable for New Yorkers as climate disruption intensifies. Inside Climate News covered the action by noting that this bill would "shift the burden of climate adaptation from taxpayers to fossil fuel companies."
