In 2024, Cornell on Fire produced two films to highlight climate hypocrisy and visualize our demands.
Cornell Commits to Confronting Climate Change Activists
A strange and precarious encounter between climate activists and Cornell leadership. Based on true events.
Why this film?
"We began organizing last year, because we believe that Cornell must heed its own climate science when it comes to slashing carbon emissions, avoiding carbon-intensive activities, and transforming their outmoded "business-as-usual" approach. When we shared our concerns with members of the administration, we were dumbstruck by responses we received," said bethany ojalehto mays, Cornell '08 and former Assistant Professor of Human Development at Cornell.
"We decided to produce a satirical film to communicate to the public the absurdity of the administration's priorities. It's one of those situations where you have to see it to believe it. The administration literally said things like, (paraphrasing) 'We can't take radical climate action because we want Cornell to be here 150 years from now. And we're like: wait, did you just hear anything we said about climate tipping points? Cornell won't be here 150 years from now if Cornell and its peers continue to participate in the disastrous status-quo trajectory they're currently on."
“What do we hope to accomplish with this film? Collectively, we need to spur Cornell to respond to the climate crisis at an appropriate level.
The film portrays the hilarity of administration balancing the climate crisis against the demands of a forever growing endowment, new campus buildings, and donor relations.
Cornell University-
We Demand Climate Justice
We call on Cornell to DECLARE A CLIMATE EMERGENCY and mobilize all its forces to address the climate crisis by enacting the following changes EXPEDITIOUSLY:
Why this film?
“Cornell University - We Demand Climate Justice,” demonstrates visually who Cornell on Fire is and what we demand.
Cornell on Fire is a coalition of Cornellians and community members calling for a just and comprehensive university-wide response to the climate emergency. In the video you hear from the broad spectrum of Cornell on Fire members and alliance partners: Cornell students, Cornell professors, Cornell staff members, local activists, indigenous leaders, vested community members, and more.
Along with the Cornell on Fire demands, the film intercuts scenes from protests and actions we’ve been involved in since late 2023 and salient points from our investigative reports.
